Lombard intersection to close for repairs

A busy intersection in Lombard will be closed this weekend for water main work underneath the pavement.

The intersection of Main Street and Wilson Avenue will be closed Friday so a contractor can replace a water main and related valves. In conjunction with the work, water will be shut off in the area Friday and Saturday.

If all goes well and the weather cooperates, the intersection should reopen on Monday or Tuesday, said Dave Gorman, the village's acting director of public works.

Southbound traffic should detour west on Madison Street, turning south on Finley Road and then east on Edward Street back to Main. Northbound traffic should follow that route in the opposite direction. The detour will be posted.

The work is part of the $3 million Main Street road repaving project, which extends from Roosevelt Road to Wilson Avenue. It includes the intersection improvements at Glenbard East High School.

State and federal grants cover $1.7 million of the project. Glenbard High School District 87 is paying a portion of the intersection improvements, roughly $70,000.

At the same time, the village is installing street lights from Roosevelt to Maple Street at an additional cost of $1.5 million.

Some of the work was slowed by incorrectly marked underground utilities, but the project cost and timing are both on target, Gorman said.

"It's been a real challenge," he said.

The road work will be largely complete by the end of August, officials said. Crews then will plant landscaping, widen sidewalks, install light poles and lights, as well as the final layer of asphalt. That work should be completed in the fall.
