Aurora man shot in face outside apartment
A 21-year-old Aurora man is in critical but stable condition after getting shot in the face outside of his apartment in a bizarre situation Sunday morning, authorities said.
The 21-year-old, whose name has been withheld by police, had just moved into an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Fox Pointe Drive in Aurora Sunday when he got into an argument with one of his guests, said Dan Ferrelli of the Aurora Police Department.
The 21-year-old man, who police say may have been drinking, went outside of the apartment complex to cool off at about 4 a.m. for several minutes. When he tried to re-enter his apartment, however, he went to the wrong apartment, thinking it was his own, Ferrelli said.
The tenant of the second apartment - a 28-year-old male whose name is being withheld by police until official charges are filed, possibly later today - woke up hearing the 21-year-old man banging on his front door, Ferrelli said.
Ferrelli said the 28-year-old man thought his apartment was being robbed, so he pulled out a hand gun, opened the door, and shot the 21-year-old man in the face.
The 21-year-old was taken by ambulance to a local hospital before being airlifted to a different hospital. Ferrelli said Aurora police do not release the names of the hospitals where patients are taken.
During the investigation following the shooting, police uncovered a pipe commonly used for marijuana, and "a significant amount" of marijuana in the 28-year-old's apartment, Ferrelli said. The 28-year-old, who was taken into custody at the time of the shooting, also complained of being ill and is being treated at a different Aurora hospital, police say.Ferrelli said police are waiting for charges to be approved by the DuPage County States Attorney's office for the 28-year-old regarding the possession and the shooting. It is also unclear if the 28-year-old had a valid firearm owner's identification card, as required by Illinois law."Obviously, the whole incident remains under investigation," Ferrelli said.
