St. Charles mom charged with trying to cover for son

A St. Charles woman was accused of lying to police this week in a failed attempt to keep her 43-year-old son from being arrested.

Police say Patricia A. Flores, 64, of 6N958 Maple Ave., lied about who was driving Tuesday when she and her son were involved in a fender-bender in St. Charles Township.

The accident took place about 4:49 p.m., when the Chevrolet Blazer that Flores was driving was rear-ended as she attempted a left turn from northbound Route 25 onto May Lane, police said.

During the crash investigation, Flores initially told police she was behind the wheel and that her live-in son, Patrick L. Schramm, had since left the scene to get her insurance card, according to a report.

But witnesses offered a different version, telling police it was Schramm and not Flores in the driver's seat before officers arrived.

When Flores was confronted with the conflicting accounts, police said, she admitted "lying to (an officer) in order to keep her son from getting into trouble" for driving on a revoked license. Schramm also admitted the original story was concocted, police said.

Both the mother and son ended up being charged; Flores for obstruction of justice and allowing an unauthorized person to drive, and Schramm for leaving the scene of a property damage accident and driving while license revoked, police said.

No injures were reported.
