Briefs: Special Olympics tag sale
The Aurora Police Department is raising funds to benefit Special Olympics with a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday on the third floor of the Area 2 Police Station, 157 N. Root St. Park in the north parking lot and enter through the north doors. Clothing, toys, furniture, books, videos, Christmas decorations, housewares and electronics will be for sale. Aurora police crackdown
A recent traffic enforcement effort by Aurora police resulted in 96 citations and 45 warnings issued to motorists. Three people also were arrested, one of whom was charged with a felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance. The traffic effort concentrated on accident-prone locations in the city, including stretches of Route 59, Eola Road, East New York Street and Farnsworth Avenue. Most of the citations were for speeding.
Money for Ride in Kane
The Association for Individual Development recently received a $15,000 grant from the Department of Human Services to be used for the Ride in Kane program. Ride in Kane, which started in February, unites Kane County's dial-a-ride programs under one umbrella, providing a curb-to-curb service, 24 hours, seven days a week, for seniors and disabled residents. Since 1961, AID has helped individuals with developmental, physical and/or mental disabilities and those who have suffered a trauma. AID places emphasis on community integration, social and leisure activities, and education and training within the community. For more information, call AID at (630) 966-4000.
ECC nursing exam
Elgin Community College's professional nursing program will hold an admission exam at 10 a.m. July 24 in Room 183 of the Health and Business Technology Building on the college's main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Sponsored by the National League for Nursing, the exams take approximately four hours. The exam is a prerequisite for admission into the program, and is an opportunity for entry into the spring or fall 2009 classes. Art fest needs helpers
Volunteers are needed for the Aug. 9 and 10 Art In Your Eye Festival at the Batavia Riverwalk. Positions include help with setup, teardown, the information tent, hospitality for the visiting artists, parking and traffic management, and children's art activity assistance.
