Defense seeks records of alleged victim in Aurora sex abuse case

At least one alleged victim in the sex abuse case against a former Aurora teacher might be discredited through school records and criminal history.

Defense attorney Fred Morelli filed motions Wednesday to subpoena the middle school, high school and Kendall County records of one of the alleged juvenile victims of Robert Steck.

Steck, 39, of 952 Shady Lane in Aurora, is charged with more than a dozen sex abuse charges involving three boys aged 14 to 11 at the time of the allegations. Steck is a former eighth-grade basketball and wrestling coach at Cowherd Middle School in Aurora.

Steck, who is free on $7,500 bail, did not appear in court Wednesday. He must be present in court when a judge rules whether or not to allow the requested records into evidence sometime in the next three weeks. The judge will first examine the records to see if there is any relevant information.

Morelli said he believes the records include a psychiatric evaluation and information on a Kendall County juvenile court conviction one of Steck's alleged victims has for sexually abusing his sister.

No matter what the judge rules, Steck is still set to receive a trial in October. In that trial, statements from all alleged victims will be used against Steck at once. Morelli had hoped to divide the charges filed on behalf of the three youths into separate cases.
