Briefs: Honduran benefit at Prairie Crossing

Bring a lawn chair, bottle of wine and a picnic basket for a performance by guitarist Michael Kelsey at 5 p.m. Sunday at Station Square at Prairie Crossing, Route 137 a mile west of Route 45. Swenson and Steglinski, an acoustic jazz duet, kick off the event at 3:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Kids under 5 are free. All proceeds benefit Tierra Neuva, a grass-roots organization promoting sustainable farming practices, educating residents about nutrition an hygiene and providing scholarships in the Honduran village. Gospel music

Choirs, soloists and dancers are featured Sunday at the Gospel Singsation, 3 to 7 p.m., at the Greenbelt Cultural Center. The free event features a variety of acts, including the Smith Singers of Little Rock, Ark. Several local choirs and singers also are schedule to perform, including Jesus Name Apostolic Church, First Corinthian Male Chorus, Columbus Pipes and Co., and Kimm Lowery. Grandwood Park Summerfest tonight

It'll be another day of fun at the 46th annual Grandwood Park Summerfest at Hutchins and Stearns School roads, just outside of Gurnee. Bands, games, food, beer and more will be offered at the festival, which runs from 2 to 11:30 p.m. today. The band Vinyl Highway is scheduled, with fireworks set to go off at dusk. In addition, the Lake County sheriff's office canine unit will perform demonstrations for Summerfest visitors.

New housing director

David A. Northern Sr., has been appointed chairman of the board of commissioners of the Lake County Housing Authority. He succeeds Alon Jeffrey, who is retiring after 32 years with the authority, 22 as director. Northern, of Round Lake, has been the deputy director since 2002. He serves on the Lake County Affordable Housing Commission, as well as leadership positions in several professional organizations. In 2007, he was named among the most influential African Americans in Lake County. The agency has grown substantially in Jeffrey's tenure from serving 285 to 3,500 households.
