Fundraiser planned for Ramsey family

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, a holiday about patriotism, fireworks and family celebrations, it is hard not to think of the Ramsey family and the struggles they are facing.

Last November, Ken Ramsey Jr. was doing what all of us were doing, celebrating Thanksgiving with family, when something went terribly wrong.

"He began having seizures," said family friend Doug Jobe. "That's really when it all started." The seizures were symptoms of a very serious condition. Ramsey was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Removal of the tumor was not possible so Ramsey is currently undergoing a very aggressive course of radiation and chemotherapy. He is unable to work and the family doesn't have insurance.

"He's in good spirits," said Jobe. "I'm amazed that as sick as he is, he is still trying to raise funds for brain cancer research."

At a time in his life when Ramsey should be enjoying life, he is facing a difficult road ahead. His wife, who is expecting a baby in September, is also unable to work because of her own condition.

The family has so much on their plate they shouldn't have to worry about bills.

"A group of us decided to do a fundraiser," said Jobe. "We just want to do what we can to help them."

The event will take place July 19 at the VFW. It will be an all day event and a $10 donation enters you in for door prizes.

"It's going to be a really fun day," said organizer Marcia Coleman. "All of the bands and the people working the event are donating their time and talents."

The featured band will be the No-Mountain Gang. There will be kids' activities and fire trucks for the kids to touch and see along with a police car. There will be bags tournaments, raffles and door prizes all day, along with plenty of the great food the VFW is known for.

"The grills will be going and we'll have hot dogs and burgers," added Jobe.

In the past Batavia has been an exceptional town when it comes to supporting those in need. Past fundraisers have seen the community come out in large numbers to show its support. Hopefully July 19 will see the same response.

"Everyone is doing such an amazing job," said Jobe. "We have TVs and stereos donated for the raffle and we have gift certificates from local businesses along with golf packages and sports memorabilia."

As usual some of Batavia's finest bakers will be sharing their specialties as well. Many have offered to bring baked goods for the bake sale.

"There will also be an arts and craft sale" added Jobe.

The event takes place at the Batavia VFW located at 645 S. River St (Route 25) from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the Batavia VFW, the Stop Lite Inn, the Batavia Bowl and the Little Red Schoolhouse.

"For those who can't make the event and still want to contribute, they can drop off donations at any of the above locations," said Coleman. Just be sure to make the checks out to Ken Ramsey Jr.

Certainly Ken's father showed support for our community the many years he served as a policeman and as sheriff. We need to show this family our support now when they need help. Plan now to attend this important fundraiser. Showing we are a community that cares will give this family just what they need during this difficult time.
