Reputed mobster Frank 'The German' Schweihs dies

Reputed Chicago mob enforcer Frank 'The German' Schweihs has died while awaiting trial on federal charges that he took part in a racketeering conspiracy and took part in two long-unsolved mob murders.

The 78-year-old Schweihs, who had long suffered from cancer, died Wednesday night, says Metropolitan Correctional Center spokesman Vincent Shaw.

Schweihs had been held at the MCC pending trial.

Schweihs had been due to go on trial in the landmark Family Secrets mob trial last September. But he was too ill.

After he was indicted, Schweihs went on the lam and was the focus of a major FBI manhunt before agents found him hiding in the kills of Kentucky.
