Briefs: Inmate garden open

The Kane County Female Inmate Garden Vegetable Stand opens for the season today at the former sheriff's office, 777 E. Fabyan Pkwy., Geneva. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fresh produce for sale includes onions, peppers, broccoli, turnips and herbs. Sweet corn and tomato will be available later this season. Proceeds support the garden project, sponsored by Kane County Adult Corrections and the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners, as well as local nonprofits. Call (630) 584-6166.

Man goes to prison for fraud

A 48-year-old Aurora man was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months in prison on wire and mail fraud charges for selling electronics over the Internet in 2005 and 2006 but failing to provide the merchandise. Charles C. Threat also must repay $47,540 to his out-of-state victims, who testified against him during his trial earlier this year before DuPage Circuit Judge Robert Anderson.

Road closure in Aurora

Starting today, Spring Street will be closed between Lincoln Avenue and Broadway for three to four weeks for storm and sanitary sewer improvement work. The bike path along the east bank of the Fox River at Spring Street also will be closed for about two weeks. Detour routes will be posted at both locations. For information, call (630) 264-INFO.

Firefighters filling the boot

The Aurora Fire Department, Union Local 99, will conduct its annual "Fill the Boot" campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at various intersections throughout the city. The money collected will be presented at the Jerry Lewis Telethon Labor Day weekend.

Crafters needed

The Batavia Mothers Club is looking for crafters to display and sell work at its 23rd annual Autumn Arts and Crafts Show. The show attracts thousands of patrons each year to see the paintings, drawings, pottery, glass, accessories, dolls and other items. Applications for the 150 booths are available at www.bataviamothersclub.org and will be taken until Aug. 18. The show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Mooseheart field house.
