Briefs: Driver ticketed in crash
A 51-year-old Hoffman Estates man has been ticketed for disobeying a traffic signal following a crash Thursday morning at Higgins and Salem roads in Schaumburg. Police say Gary Szymanski ran a red light around 10:30 a.m. and slammed his Ford Explorer into a classic 1957 Chevy Bel Air, ejecting the driver. Contrary to an earlier police report that there were only minor injuries, 66-year-old Dennis Gibson of Hoffman Estates sustained five broken ribs and a broken vertebrae in his neck. Gibson also had surgery to try and restore what doctors say may be permanent vision loss in his left eye. He remains in the intensive care unit at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.
