Rays rout Royals for seventh straight win

Evan Longoria hit a 2-run homer during a 4-run third, and the host Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 9-2 Sunday for their seventh straight win.

James Shields (7-5) gave up 2 runs and 4 hits over 7 innings to win his third consecutive start. He struck out eight and walked one.

The Rays, with the majors' best record at 55-32, have won 11 of 12 overall. Their seven-game winning streak is the second-longest in team history; Tampa Bay won 12 in a row in June 2004.

Esteban German drove in both runs for the Royals, who have lost seven of nine.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 4 (10): Rookie Brett Gardner singled home the winning run off Jonathan Papelbon with two outs in the 10th inning, and host New York overcame a 2-run deficit to beat Boston for a four-game split. Alex Rodriguez hit his 536th homer, tying Yankees Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle for 13th on the career list, and Robinson Cano had a 2-run triple in the seventh off Javier Lopez that tied it at 4-4.

Twins 4, Indians 3: Carlos Gomez capped a 3-run seventh inning against all-star Cliff Lee (11-2) with an RBI groundout, and host Minnesota handed Cleveland its eighth straight loss.

Rangers 11, Orioles 10: David Murphy hit a 3-run homer, and Ian Kinsler got 3 singles to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, leading Texas past host Baltimore.

Tigers 2, Mariners 1 (15): Seattle used backup catcher Jamie Burke (0-1) in the 15th inning, and Detroit took advantage, scoring the winning run on Marcus Thames' sacrifice fly to beat the host Mariners.

Angels 7, Blue Jays 1: Jon Garland (8-5) pitched a 6-hitter for his 100th major-league victory, Jeff Mathis tied a career high with 3 RBI, and Juan Rivera homered for Los Angeles in a victory over Toronto.

National League

Mets 4, Phillies 2 (12): Fernando Tatis hit a 2-run homer in the 12th inning, lifting New York Mets to a 4-2 victory over host Philadelphia in a game that ended more than seven hours after it started.

Dodgers 5, Giants 3: James Loney doubled twice and drove in 3 runs, and Los Angeles beat San Francisco for its third consecutive series win. Andre Ethier added 3 hits and drove in a run for the Dodgers.

Braves 7, Astros 6 (17): Mark Teixeira singled off the wall with the bases loaded in the 17th inning, giving Atlanta a victory over Houston in the longest game in Turner Field history. Rain delayed the start of the game by 1 hour, 50 minutes, and solid pitching extended it much longer.

Brewers 11, Pirates 6: J.J. Hardy hit 2 homers, all-star starter Ryan Braun added 1, and host Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks 3, Padres 2: Randy Johnson struck out 10 and allowed 3 hits in 6 innings and host Arizona beat San Diego.

Marlins 10, Rockies 5: Cody Ross homered and drove in 5 runs, Chris Volstad tossed 2 scoreless innings to win his major-league debut, and Florida beat host Colorado. Ross knocked in 15 runs in the four-game series after coming to Colorado with just 12 RBI this season.

Reds 6, Nationals 5: Adam Dunn hit a 3-run homer that started Cincinnati's comeback, and the host Reds held on to beat Washington, completing a four-game series sweep.
