Mayor downplays violence near festival
Mayor Richard Daley is calling the violence that occurred blocks away from the Taste of Chicago isolated incidents, contending it's impossible for police to prevent gang members from attending such events.
A man was killed and several others injured Thursday in shootings blocks from the festival following the pre-Independence Day fireworks display. In reaction, police presence at the Taste of Chicago was increased.
Daley pointed out the shootings were not in Grant Park, where 3.5 million people attended the festival over a 10-day period. And he said there were no problems at the event, despite the presence of gang members.
Daley noted that those involved in the shootings were acquainted with each other.
The mayor also contended the shootings won't have any effect on the city's efforts to attract the 2016 Olympic Games.
