Learn how to handle emergencies

Ordinary citizens can do extraordinary things.

It's proven time and time again through Community Emergency Response Team programs, in which residents train to assist in emergency and disaster situations.

Many towns including Palatine, Inverness, Buffalo Grove and Hanover Park have CERT teams.

In the fall, Harper College will offer participants a similar forum to learn how to handle even the most difficult tragedies.

The Emergency Management course will provide an overview of emergency response, from evacuation procedures to in-crisis decision-making, communication and recovery.

The class is geared toward the general public, as well as public safety professionals and students already in Harper's fire science and law enforcement courses.

Assistant Professor Sam Giordano, a former firefighter, will teach the course.

The 16-week class will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. To enroll, go to harpercollege.edu.
