Briefs: N. Aurora, Batavia fireworks

The North Aurora Fourth of July Fireworks Show will take place at 9 tonight. Fireworks will be launched from the village-owned property adjacent to the North Aurora Towne Center. The viewing and parking area for the Batavia fireworks has changed, With the Batavia High School grounds closed for construction, viewers can sit at Engstrom Family Park, Millview Drive and Main Street. The fireworks are also visible from the commercial parking lots along Randall Road between Wilson and Main streets and the Siemens lots on Wilson just west of Van Nortwick Street.

Look who dropped in

Aurora officials announced Wednesday that a sky diver is scheduled to drop into the city's prefireworks festivities between 8 and 8:15 p.m. Friday.

Fireworks in St. Charles

Fireworks, food and music will be part of today's Fourth of July celebration in St. Charles. The free event will start 6 p.m. at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave., with live music by Red Woody and picnic-style offerings such as hot dogs, bratwurst and ice cream. A $27,000 fireworks display will start at dark. Picnic tables will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, but families are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. ECC duo net technical honors:

Two Elgin Community College heating, ventilation and air conditioning students earned top places at the National Skills USA competition in late June. Matthew Abangan of St. Charles and Matthew Gebben of Algonquin placed fifth in the sheet metal competition and 15th in the heating and air conditioning competition. The team, known as Matt Squared were two of the 5,000 students at the Kansas City, Mo., competition.

Windmill Whirl 5K coming:

Spots are open for the Windmill Whirl 5K community run during Windmill City Fest in Batavia. The run is at 7 p.m. July 11, starting at Houston Street and Island Avenue and following the Fox River bike trail. There are awards for top finishers. The cost to register is $20 before Saturday or $25 race day registration. Runners can register online at www.bataviaparks.org or at the park district office at 327 W. Campton cruise nights:

Weekly "cruise nights" featuring hot rods and vintage vehicles are planned through September in Campton Hills. The events take place from 6 to 9 p.m. every Friday at Campton Crossings shopping center along Route 64. Cruise nights also include '50s and '60s music and trophies.
