Sabathia earns victory in Brewers debut

CC Sabathia was a bit wild in his debut with the Milwaukee Brewers but still delivered as advertised in a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

Sabathia (1-0) gave up 2 earned runs and 5 hits over 6 innings in his first outing since being traded by Cleveland on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young winner walked five, tying the season high he set in April.

Now it remains to be seen whether the tight end-sized left-hander can pair with incumbent ace Ben Sheets to power the Brewers past the Cubs - who delivered a quick counterpunch to Milwaukee's trade for Sabathia by prying Rich Harden from Oakland in a trade Tuesday.

Showcasing everything from a 96-mph fastball to offspeed pitches that dipped into the low 80s in front of a sellout crowd of 42,533, Sabathia kept the Rockies grounded early. He allowed only five balls to escape the infield through his first 5 innings: a double, 2 singles and 2 flyouts as the Brewers took a 4-1 lead.

But Sabathia got in trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs on an infield single by Matt Holliday and walks to Garrett Atkins and Ryan Spillborghs.

Cardinals 2, Phillies 0: Joel Pineiro and three relievers combined on a 6-hitter, and Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick hit solo homers for St. Louis in a victory over host Philadelphia. Pineiro (3-4) allowed 5 hits and walked three in 6 innings for his first win since April 29. He was 0-2 with seven no-decisions in his previous 9 starts.

Mets 7, Giants 0: Mike Pelfrey won his fifth straight start and Carlos Beltran drove in 4 runs for host New York in a victory over San Francisco. Beltran hit a 3-run homer in the first, and Carlos Delgado also connected off Tim Lincecum (10-2) to help the Mets win their fourth straight. New York is 1 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

Diamondbacks 2, Nationals 0: Brandon Webb earned his major-league-leading 13th win, pitching 6 scoreless innings for Arizona in a win over host Washington. Webb (13-4) struck out six and allowed 6 hits and 2 walks. It was the 16th time in his 19 starts Webb lasted at least six innings.

Red Sox 6, Twins 5: Manny Ramirez hit a game-tying, 2-run homer as part of a 4-run eighth inning to rally host Boston past Minnesota.Ramirez's 17th homer came off reliever Matt Guerrier (4-4) and tied the game at 5-5. One out later, Kevin Youkilis doubled and Brandon Moss singled up the middle for the go-ahead run.

Yankees 5, Rays 0: Derek Jeter had a big hit and made a big play in the field to back Andy Pettitte (10-6) in host New York's win over Tampa Bay. Jeter had an early go-ahead double off starter Scott Kazmir, and made a stellar play in the seventh that preserved a 2-run lead.

Tigers 9, Indians 2: Miguel Cabrera hit 2 homers, Marcus Thames had 1, and Justin Verlander (6-9) was dominant after a shaky start to lift host Detroit over Cleveland. The Tigers (45-44) lead the majors with 21 wins since June 7.

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 6: Toronto's Alex Rios scored the winning run when shortstop Freddie Bynum misplayed a grounder in the bottom of the ninth against visiting Baltimore. The Blue Jays rallied from a 6-2 deficit.

Rangers 3, Angels 2: Josh Hamilton's major-league-leading 87th RBI helped Texas left-hander Matt Harrison win his debut, beating visiting Los Angeles. Harrison was just a little better than all-star lefty Joe Saunders of the Angels.
