Arrest in Wheeling barricade incident

A man who police thought had barricaded himself inside a Wheeling home Friday has been arrested for carrying a handgun.

Gabriel Guzman, 24, of 1019 N. Karlov, Chicago, was arrested at 9:25 p.m. Monday and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

Early Friday morning, police said a Wheeling officer saw Guzman with a handgun in the area of 800 Colonial Drive and when the officer approached, Guzman ran into a townhouse at 812 Colonial Drive.

Police determined two other adults and three young children were also in the home but walked out without incident.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System team was called to the scene, but when the authorities entered the home several hours later, Guzman was not there.

"He left immediately," Wheeling Deputy Chief Bill Benson said. "He basically ran in the front door and out the back door."

The incident sparked lane closures in the area until 6:30 a.m., and nearby residents were told to stay in their homes.

Guzman was taken to a hearing this morning in Rolling Meadows and remains in custody with a $50,000 bond for the felony charge. His next court date is July 25.
