Navy Seaman Recruit Joseph Abbinante, son of Antionette M. Calcara of Carol Stream and Vito R. Abbinante of Palatine, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Abbinante completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Abbinante is a 2007 graduate of Glenbard North High School, Carol Stream.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Colin R. Carson graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission; organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate's degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Carson, the son of Maureen Carson Bartlett and Kent Carson of Arlington Heights, is a 2006 graduate of James B. Conant High School, Hoffman Estates.

Air Force Cadet Austin W. Dowling graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The graduate received a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

Dowling, who received a degree in systems engineering management, is the son of Geoff and Joy Dowling of Barrington and a 2005 graduate of Barrington High School.

The United States Coast Guard Academy announced that Kevin O'Brien of Palatine was recognized for superior academic achievement and leadership potential. O'Brien, who attended Palatine High School, has accepted an appointment to attend the Coast Guard Academy and was sworn in as a member of the Class of 2012, on June 30.

He is the son of Donna and Jerry O'Brien of Palatine and grandson of Joan Wasielewski of Arlington Heights and Mary and Ray O'Brien of Chicago.

Cadet Corinne Noble, daughter of Bates and Marianne Noble of Barrington Hills, was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. She received the Superintendent's Award for Achievement, which recognizes cadets who simultaneously achieve excellence in all programs: academic, military, and physical. Noble was also named captain of the West Point Equestrian team. She graduated from Barrington High School in 2006, and is majoring in economics and French, with plans for a 2010 graduation. She will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army.

Army National Guard Pvt. Adam P. Neveau graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Neveau, the son of Lisa Gullo of Palatine, is a 2005 Palatine High School graduate.

Airman 1st Class Colin R. Carson
