Sudanese leader getting just deserts

I read with surprise and excitement about the International Criminal Court's decision to indict Sudanese President Omar Bashir on charges of genocide regarding the horrible situation in Darfur. I completely support this effort on behalf of the victims of genocide and hope that as awareness grows, the nations of the world will finally stand as one to denounce any hate or prejudice wherever it may exist.

I would also like to remind readers that Bashir is guilty of crimes beyond Darfur. Let us not forget that Bashir was in charge of military operations against south Sudan as well, beginning back in the 1980s.

Many victims of Bashir's first acts of genocide fled south Sudan and became known as Lost Boys, having lost their homes, families and cultural ties. A few of these first victims have struggled to rebuild their lives in the U.S. and are here in the Chicago area. Many more refugees, continue to hope for the return of their homes and villages.

South Sudan is working to recover from the devastation created by Bashir and his followers. Let us hope that Darfur may also recover, and that Omar Bashir will receive the full consequences of his actions.
