House fire kills two dogs in Prospect Heights

A Prospect Heights home was extensively damaged after a fire broke out on the 500 block of Kewaunee Court.

The owners were not home at the time, but their two dogs died in the blaze.

Crews responded to the scene around 7:45 p.m. and found heavy fire in the house. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes. Tankers had to be brought in because the area does not have fire hydrants.

"It's still standing but uninhabitable," said Deputy Chief Tim Jones. "It's a complete loss."

The state fire marshal has been brought in to investigate the cause, which remains undetermined.

Fire crews from Niles, North Maine, Des Plaines, Northbrook, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, Long Grove, Palatine Rural and Wheeling assisted.
