Child shoots self in head

Police say a 3-year-old Joliet boy is dead after being shot in the head with a handgun. Police Chief Fred Hayes says the boy appears to have been playing with the loaded gun Wednesday when it discharged. The boy was home with his mother, who drove the boy to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead. The Will County coroner's office says the initial cause of death is a single gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday. The child's name was not immediately released. Police are still investigating.
