Illinois Muskie Alliance deserves it due

In a recent column I reported that Illinois' muskie program isn't getting much help in the way of financial aid from the state. The major credit for the continued success of the program, though, goes to the Illinois Muskie Alliance, made up of the various muskie clubs in the state.

These clubs have been working with state biologists to improve the fishery. I have long been a supporter of the Alliance's efforts and success stories. I hunt for muskies on the Chain and have promoted that fishery there and the rest of the state for many years.

It's my firm belief that without the constant urging and help from Alliance members, muskie fishing in Illinois would return to the days when hardly a toothy critter swam in our lakes.

Free fishing days: Anyone interested in fishing is invited to wet a line this weekend as part of Illinois Free Fishing Days. This weekend only, anyone may fish without having to purchase a sport fishing license, inland trout stamp or salmon stamp.

In the hunt: In Canada, the Alberta Hunting Heritage Act-Bill 201 has been passed by the Alberta, Canada Legislature. The measure has been championed by the Alberta Fish & Game Association and gives provincial residents a statutory right to hunt, fish and trap. Supporters say it will secure the future of the "time-honored activities in Alberta."

Fishing report: It's better than ever right now.

Fox Chain: Guide Darrell Baker keeps reporting that the walleye angling is red hot. He told me he's having a tremendous season, as are his guide parties. Contact him at (847) 337-5559. Bass fishing on Channel Lake continues to heat up with some decent fish in 3-5 feet of water.

Fox River: Despite rainfall and murky water, the smallmouth bite moves steadily on with good catches reported from Elgin and Algonquin.

Cooling Lakes: Braidwood bass are in a cooperative mood. Try Mazonia for some bigger largemouth just off the break lines.

Lake Michigan: Decent perching at Montrose and Navy Pier. Lake Forest has slowed for perch. Coho salmon action out of Northpoint is good.
