Special favor does immigrant no favor

Regarding "Schools must make English necessary," (Fence Post, Sunday, Sarah Fallon): Our current school system is doing so much harm to the Spanish community.

This special pandering is not helping their children. In fact, it causes them great harm.

It limits the children's potential for growth and excellence, not only in school, but also, long-term, in career choices, in life opportunities.

No matter what the circumstances, when we are offered a choice, we will always take the course of least resistance.

But as experience teaches us, that is also always the worst choice to make.

When things are made easy for us, we are not challenged, we do not grow, we do not achieve, we stagnate and we drop out.

As millions of immigrants have proven through the ages, it is that very struggle that they at first encounter that made them strong, made them overcome incredible obstacles, made them build a nation that has no parallel in the world.

Why are we denying the Spanish community the same opportunity for their children to reach out beyond their comfort level, to overcome their limitations, to be challenged into achieving their personal greatness?

It is when they are young that children absorb knowledge the fastest, their learning capabilities are the greatest.

We are allowing children of other nationalities to learn the hard way, the right way, and they are excelling.

Why are we taking this learning experience away from the Spanish-speaking children?
