Woman shot several times today in Elgin likely to survive

An unidentified woman who was shot multiple times Thursday morning in Elgin is expected to survive, police said.

The shooting occurred at 3:10 a.m. at 370 Ann St.

The woman was taken by paramedics to the hospital.

"The woman underwent surgery this morning at the hospital, is alert and her injuries do not appear to be life threatening," Elgin police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said.

One police officer said it appeared a total of five shots were fired, three of them striking the victim in the back.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, police said they were still unable to question the victim in the hospital.

Although the Elgin Police Department released little information about the shooting, a person who knows the victim said the incident seemed to have occurred because the victim was involved in a child custody dispute.

Police sources said a male acquaintance of the victim was being interviewed by Elgin police Thursday afternoon and might be held overnight for more questioning.

The man in custody can be held at the Elgin lockup for three days while charges against him are determined, officials said.

If charges against him are approved overnight, he is expected to appear at a bond hearing today.
