Elgin man charged in murder-for-hire scheme

An Elgin man was charged in a murder-for-hire scheme, accused of offering a fellow inmate in the Cook County jail $4,000 to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Dan Evans Jr., 36, of 706 N. Douglas, was arrested in October on a domestic battery case in Arlington Heights, accused of harassing his ex-girlfriend by phone.

He was denied bond and had been sitting in jail since Dec. 3, said Penny Mateck, a spokeswoman for the Cook County sheriff's police.

After being incarcerated, Evans approached another inmate in March with an offer, Mateck said.

"He offered the inmate $4,000 to, in his words, 'make her disappear,' " said Mateck. "Our officers learned of the situation and ultimately were able to get him charged as of Tuesday."

Evans was charged with solicitation of murder for hire and solicitation of murder. He appeared in court in Rolling Meadows Wednesday and received a $1 million bond from Judge Joseph Urso, according to court records. He was appointed a public defender.

Evans will face another court hearing in Rolling Meadows on June 17.
