Lutheran General top executive will step down in January

Bruce Campbell, the CEO and president of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, will resign effective Jan. 1.

Campbell, 60, led the hospital for 16 years, leading two of Advocate's teaching hospitals -- Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Lutheran General Children's Hospital.

While CEO, he has overseen the building of a new Center for Advanced Care and the construction of a 192-bed replacement hospital, scheduled to open next year.

"(Campbell) has led the organization to perennially be ranked among the Top 100 Hospitals in the United States and the achievement of Nursing Magnet status in August 2005," said Advocate's Executive Vice President Bill Santulli in a staff memo.

Prior to joining Lutheran General, Bruce was president of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago from 1993 to 2000.

Advocate Lutheran will soon begin searching for Campbell's replacement, said hospital spokesman Colette Urban. It's not known how long the search process will take, she said.

Campbell declined to comment on his registration.
