Jones' 400th homer powers Braves' victory
Atlanta Braves slugger Chipper Jones hit his 400th career home run Thursday night and finished with 4 hits in Atlanta's 7-5 victory over the visiting Florida Marlins, raising his major-league-leading batting average to .418.
Jones came out of the dugout for a curtain call as fans cheered his milestone homer in the sixth inning. He became the third switch-hitter to reach 400 home runs, following Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle (536) and Eddie Murray (504).
"To be lumped in with those guys is what I'm shooting for," Jones said. "This is a step closer but still a long, long way from those guys. They set the bar really high."
Brian McCann and Yunel Escobar also went deep, all 3 homers coming off Ricky Nolasco (5-4). He gave up 11 hits and seven runs in 5 2-3 innings after winning four straight.
Jair Jurrjens (6-3) gave up a season-high 11 hits and 5 runs in six innings but won as the Braves rallied from a 5-3 deficit.
Phillies 5, Reds 0: Cole Hamels pitched a 3-hitter for his second career shutout, and host Philadelphia took advantage of 2 dropped balls to beat Cincinnati.
Ken Griffey Jr. remained 1 shy of 600 home runs, going 1-for-4 in his first start in four games. Junior hit a double off the wall in left-center, grounded out twice and hit a deep drive to center field leading off the ninth.
Geoff Jenkins hit a solo shot for the NL East-leading Phillies, who won for the ninth time in 11 games. Hamels (6-4) struck out four and walked three.
Cardinals 4-9, Nationals 1-10: Todd Wellemeyer won his fifth straight decision, Troy Glaus hit a 2-run homer, and Albert Pujols the first pinch-hit homer of his career to lead St. Louis in the opener of a day-night doubleheader at Washington.
In the second game, Elijah Dukes' 2-run, 10th inning home run gave the Nationals a split on the day.
Wellemeyer (7-1), who hasn't lost in 7 starts since April 28, allowed 5 hits in 6 innings. He struck out five, walked one and hit a batter with a pitch.
Dukes, who had 4 hits and 4 RBI and finished a double shy of the cycle, homered over the center-field wall to help Washington snap a four-game losing streak in Game 2.
Pirates 4, Astros 3: Paul Maholm pitched 8 strong innings, Jason Michaels hit a 3-run homer, and host Pitsburgh beat Houston for the second straight night.
Jason Bay added a run-scoring triple to break a 3-3 tie in the fifth. The Astros have lost seven of eight.

Yankees 9, Blue Jays 8: Pinch hitter Jason Giambi connected for a 2-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying New York past visiting Toronto.
Giambi's drive on an 0-2 pitch off closer B.J. Ryan into the right-field upper deck -- just inside the foul pole -- capped the Yankees' biggest comeback win this season. In erasing a 7-2 deficit, they overcame another poor outing by Chien-Ming Wang and a key error by center fielder Melky Cabrera.
Kyle Farnsworth (1-2) earned the win despite allowing a run in the top of the ninth.
Red Sox 7, Rays 1: Manny Ramirez homered, drove in 5 runs and got into a shouting match with a teammate as Boston beat visiting Tampa Bay in a game that included a bench-clearing brawl.
TV cameras showed Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis being separated after exchanging words.
The Red Sox posted their 13th straight home win, matching the majors' longest streak in nearly two years, and completed their second three-game sweep of the Rays.
Jon Lester (4-3), making his first Fenway start since his no-hitter against Kansas City May 19, gave up 1 run and 8 hits, struck out five, hit two batters and didn't walk anyone in 6½ innings.
Ramirez's 3-run homer -- the 503rd home run of his career -- gave Boston a 3-0 lead in the first.
Rangers 9, Indians 4: Michael Young homered and extended his hitting streak to 21 games, and Kevin Millwood shook after a bad first inning to pitch into the seventh as host Texas beat Cleveland.
It was another tough outing for Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia (3-8). He yielded 5 runs and 9 hits while striking out eight over 6 innings. The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner has lost three straight decisions and is winless since May 14.
Orioles 3, Twins 2: Adam Jones hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning, and visiting Baltimore beat Minnesota.
Jones opened the inning with a drive into the left-field seats against reliever Brian Bass (2-2). Twins starter Scott Baker came off the disabled list and threw 99 pitches in 5 innings. He gave up 2 runs and 5 hits.
