3-year-old Chicago boy dies when crushed by gate

Authorities say a 3-year-old Chicago boy has died after a metal gate he was swinging on fell and hit him in the head.

A Cook County medical examiner's office spokesman says Chris Cooper died after suffering head trauma.

Police say the boy was playing with other children and hanging on the gate around 5:30 p.m. Friday (in the 900 block of North Cambridge Avenue) when it fell off its hinges and onto the child.

Paramedics took Cooper to Children's Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Chicago Police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor says detectives are conducting a death investigation, which is normal procedure.
