Another rabid bat found
The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center is urging residents to avoid contact with bats after a second bat found in a Lake Villa backyard May 24 tested positive for rabies. There was no human contact with the bat. The first bat that tested positive for rabies this year was found in Lake Villa. Rabies is an almost always fatal disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. The disease is fully preventable with prophylaxis. Most commonly, people get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. In other cases, people can contract rabies if any infectious material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, comes in contact with one's nose, mouth, eyes or an open wound. Anyone who has direct contact with a bat or notices a bat acting in an unusual manner, such as flying in daylight or lying on the ground should call (847) 949-9925. If the bat is inside of your house, do not chase it away because it may be needed for rabies testing.
Lake Zurich High wins
Nathalie Rock and Erika Powers, juniors at Lake Zurich High School, recently won silver awards in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. They will travel this week to New York City to attend the national Scholastic Awards ceremony and will attend creative industry workshops. The awards contest is one of the only programs in the country to acknowledge and recognize teenagers who excel in art and writing. In 2008, more than 100,000 artworks and manuscripts were reviewed by regional programs throughout the country. Only the top 1 percent of the work submitted received national-level awards. Rock and Powers are on the high school honor roll, members of the varsity track team and play in the orchestra. They have been best friends since kindergarten.

Cut phone bill costs
The first of three upcoming consumer workshops held in the Northwest suburbs to help residents save money on their phone bills takes place Tuesday. The Citizen Utility Board's free phone bill clinics will alert consumers about ways to cut their calling costs, including how to get a $20 long-distance credit negotiated by CUB. Attendees should bring their phone bills so CUB experts can analyze them and help find ways to save. The clinics, co-sponsored by state Sen. Matt Murphy of Palatine, will be held 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Indian Trails Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck Road, Wheeling; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10 at Prospect Heights Library, 12 N. Elm St.; and 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 24 at Palatine Township Senior Center, 505 Quentin Road, Palatine.
