Poverty doesn't justify abortion

I am astonished at the letter (Fence Post, Thursday) from Mr. D. Crost. This letter was critical of a pro-life letter published earlier.

Mr. Crost first references statistics from a recent study showing that abortions have decreased by 7.7 percent between 2000 and 2005.

He then uses the same study to point out contraception is more likely to be used by those who have more education and are "more affluent" while abortion rates are significantly greater among women who are black, Hispanic or below the poverty line.

Finally, he states the pro-life position should be re-focused toward reducing poverty and promoting education.

Are we supposed to now think the end justifies the means?

Should we forget the unalienable human rights of life and liberty stated in the Declaration of Independence and implemented by our Constitution?

Does Mr. Crost advocate using abortion to limit the number of blacks, Hispanics and other poorly educated people in the world?

I'm sorry. But this sounds too much like the "practical" thinking that lead to the gas chambers and ovens of Nazi Germany.
