Flood warnings for Des Plaines, Fox rivers through suburbs

The National Weather Service in Chicago issued flood warnings for areas along the Des Plaines and Fox rivers in Kane, Lake, McHenry and Cook counties.

The warnings last until Monday evening in northern suburbs and Tuesday evening farther south. The potential flooding comes from water flowing south from Wisconsin, where flooding concerns last week resulted from rains and melting snow.

The rivers affected:

• Des Plaines River near the town of Russell in Lake County.

• Des Plaines River near Gurnee.

• Des Plaines River at Lincolnshire.

• Des Plaines River near Des Plaines.

• Fox River at Algonquin Lock & Dam, with tailwater affecting Kane and McHenry counties.

• Fox River at Montgomery affecting Kane and Kendall counties.

At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Des Plaines River near Russell downstream to U.S. 41 in Gurnee was at 7.6 feet. Flood stage is 7 feet, and at 8 feet, nearby land floods and water approaches home.

The weather service said minor flooding is already occurring and is expected through Monday evening.

The Des Plaines River from U.S. 41 in Gurnee downstream to Townline Road in Libertyville was at 8.9 feet Saturday night, with flood stage at 7 feet and homes threatened at 9 feet. Flooding is expected through Tuesday night.

The Fox River from Red Gate Road in St. Charles downstream to Millington could bring flooding "until further notice," the weather service said.

At 8:15 p.m. Saturday the river was at 13 feet, which is flood stage, and it was expected to peak at 13.1 feet Sunday night.

The weather service also warned of flooding around the Rock River.
