Try to help educate owners of dogs

Lately, there have been several letters to the editor griping about dogs being walked near the writers' homes.

While there are certainly some inconsiderate dog owners, the vast majority are law-abiding, considerate neighbors who are just trying to enjoy the fresh air with their canine companions while both get some much-needed exercise.

The writers of these letters are fortunate to have dog-run areas where their dogs can relieve themselves.

Many dog-owners live in condos, town-homes, or apartments where they do not have dog-runs or even yards. Should they be denied the joy and companionship of a canine friend?

Five- to 10-million adoptable animals in shelters are killed every year for lack of space. Should even more of them be denied homes?

Even those who have yards still need to exercise themselves and their dogs. How do these writers know that the dog owners go directly home after the dog does its business?

In my own neighborhood, about 40 percent of the homes have one or more dogs. I see very little dog droppings on my twice-daily walks. I do see droppings from raccoons, rabbits and geese, all of which are much more likely to cause disease.

I agree that retractable leashes are a control problem if not used properly.

This is simply ignorance on the part of owner, so instead of complaining, why not help educate people. If you see someone breaking the law or using a leash incorrectly, try speaking to them.

I carry an ample supply of specially-made bags which I never fail to use, never let my dog urinate on anyone's property and use a six-foot fixed leash.

People need to be educated. These letter writers claim to be dog owners themselves. If so, how about helping to eliminate the problem instead of just whining about it?
