Tween wins car
A Chicago Public Schools student had perfect attendance during the last school year. For her record, Ashley Martinez won a new Dodge Caliber. Because she's only 12, Ashley has to wait at least four years to drive her prize. Chicago Public Schools spokesman Frank Shuftan says the school district offered the car as part of an effort to boost attendance, which has hovered around 91 percent the last several years. To increase that average, Chicago's school system has offered several rewards in recent years, including vacations to Wisconsin resorts, laptops and iPods. Some experts do not approve of such programs. Parenting expert Nancy Samalin says the main reason children are sent to school is to love learning. However, Chicago Public Schools chief Arne Duncan says the incentives give parents an extra reason to make sure their children go to classes.
