Barrington High School graduate and first-year Harvard Business School student Krishna Yeshwant, a South Barrington native, was a member of the winning team in the MIT 100K Entrepreneurship Competition.

The team, Diagnostics-For-All, a nonprofit diagnostics company that seeks to deliver health care agencies and commercial organizations with a new generation of point-of-care tools to address the diagnostic and clinical management needs of the global medical community, won the $100,000 prize which was awarded during a ceremony on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in May.

Additionally, the Diagnostics-For-All team took first place in the social enterprise track at the Harvard Business School's 12th annual Business Plan Contest held in the school's Burden Auditorium.

Arlington Heights resident Megan DaPisa will return to Kenya as a deaf education volunteer with the Peace Corps in June. She initially began her service in Kenya in September 2007, but returned home when the program was temporarily suspended due to the instability of the region following a local election. DaPisa will teach at a deaf primary school. The deaf education program in Kenya was launched in 1992 and includes computer training and health and HIV/AIDS education programs.

The American Legion Auxiliary-Palatine Unit 690 hosted its Americanism Essay contest titled "Patriotism-The Spirit of America." This year's winner is Annie Feifar of Inverness, an eighth-grader at St. Theresa School. An honorable mention went to her classmate, Mallory Remick.

Bill Scheffel of Chicago was elected the AMVETS State Commander for 2008-09. Scheffel is an active member of Post 66 in Wheeling and has been a member of AMVETS for more than 20 years.

The Little City board of directors presented Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart with its President's Cabinet Award for his ongoing support of the Palatine nonprofit. The President's Cabinet award was created last year as one of three levels of awards for those outstanding individuals, groups or businesses that provide a continuous high level of support to Little City.

Linda Talentowski was appointed chief financial officer of the Congregation of St. Joseph, LaGrange Park, a community of more than 800 Catholic women religious and more than 500 lay associates. Talentowski, who previously served as the director of finance for the congregation, is a graduate of Prospect High School in Mount Prospect.

Carol Stream resident Totie Leonardo achieved a hole-in-one on the fourth hole at Apple Orchard Golf Course in Bartlett. Leonardo used a sand wedge on the 80-yard hole to achieve the feat.
