City champs play tournament at Wing Park

The last Elgin City Golf Championship at the Wing Park course was held in 1971.

But a tournament 100 years in the making was held last June 14 and 15.

Organizers hope to make it an annual event next year, perhaps with the moniker of the Wing Park Open.

The Wing Park Centennial Open last week featured 32 golfers, including a six-time city champion.

Jad Kessuvan of Elgin took the top prize, with Wes Kruse, also of Elgin, finishing second.

Golfers were grouped into "flights" by their previous round or average at the 9-hole course that opened in 1908.

The "A" Flight winner was Pat Delmonico and Art Schueneman was second.

The "B" Flight winner was Neil Lamz and Roger Lenart was runner-up.

The "C" Flight winner was Les Jones, followed by Harry Jones.

The course also was host to a Senior Scramble Monday, which was won by a four-person team of Bob and Steve Thoren, Jeff Lange and Bill Hoffer.

Together, the quartet had notched 10 City Championship between them, including six by Bob Thoren.

As of press time, organizers were still determining if the two events generated additional proceeds for the course's junior program or Sunshine Through Golf, which introduces the sport to disabled children, veterans and those with low incomes.

Mike Lehman, Elgin's Parks and Recreation Department's golf services manager, said an Elgin Chamber of Commerce outing Tuesday raised at least $680 in a "Beat the Pro" contest for those two charities.

Congrats to: The first two recipients of the Cal's Angels College Scholarship Program.

Kyle Daker of South Elgin High School and Michael Mastalski of St. Charles North High School recently were awarded $10,000 scholarships for college.

The four-year scholarship provides $2,500 per year.

Cal Sutter, a South Elgin resident and all-star baseball player, was 13 when he died from leukemia in August 2006.

Each year, a committee will select one graduating senior baseball player from South Elgin High School and another from St. Charles North High School. These are the two schools attended by Cal's teammates.

Candidates must: play on their school's varsity baseball team, be a "team player," truly enjoy the game, be a good student, and need for college-related financial assistance.

To renew the scholarship, recipients must maintain a B average or better and spend one day each summer doing volunteer work for the foundation at the annual golf outing, dinner and auction event.

Daker was ranked ninth in his class of 392 when he applied. He is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, volunteer for cancer programs, is a member of numerous and plans to attend the University of Illinois.

Mastalski was ranked in the top half of his class. He's played baseball since he was 5, and plans to attend Carthage College and become a police officer.
