Grayslake set for art fest
Some new twists and a return to a familiar location will be part of Saturday's Grayslake Arts Festival.
About 60 artists are expected for the 13th annual free art event sponsored by the Grayslake Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It'll run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Chamber director Karen Christian Smith said the event will be back on Center Street, stretching from Whitney to Lake streets.
Last year's festival was in a Seymour Avenue parking lot, but she said participants found the event has more pizazz on Center Street.
Pottery, photography, sculpture, wood, ceramics, oil and pastel painting, jewelry, watercolor, functional art, and pen-and-ink drawing will be among the offerings as part of the juried show. Five media categories will offer a $100 Best of Show prize to winners.
Christian said while the number of artists will be down slightly because the Leap Year pushed the event a week later than usual, many new participants have signed up.
In addition, works from budding artists from Grayslake Central and North high schools will be featured for the first time. The students and teachers will be present with their displays.
"We need to showcase what our students are doing," Smith said.
Food, entertainment and children's activities will be part of the arts festival. The event never has a rain date.
Three Grayslake women hatched the idea of the arts festival.
