Three men accused of breaking home, car windows

Three men were charged Thursday with smashing the windows of a home and vehicle in retaliation against a rival street gang member, Round Lake Park police said.

Police Chief George Filenko said his department is ready for an acceleration in gang action.

"Usually, in the beginning of the summer months, there's a spike in gang activity because the weather is nice," Filenko said.

The following were charged in the attack on the 200 block of Brier Hill Drive, just north of Route 134, about 3 a.m. Thursday:

• Onesimo Zamaraipa, 18, of 516 Washington St., Round Lake Park, was charged with criminal damage to property and mob action.

• Brandon Cardona, 19, of an unknown Mundelein address, was charged with criminal damage to property, mob action and unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor.

• Alfredo Nuno, 20, of 34781 Holman Ave., unincorporated Ingleside in Lake County, was ticketed for permitting a person under the influence of alcohol to drive. He also was charged with mob action and criminal damage to property.

Filenko said they used a baseball bat to smash the front picture windows at the rival gang member's house. He said they broke windows of the rival's vehicle on the driveway before fleeing in a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Officers on patrol nabbed the threesome blocks from the damaged car and home after a nearby resident called police. Filenko said others were present at the targeted home, but only one adult resident is a known street gang member.

Nuno, Cardona and Zamaraipa each were held in lieu of $150,000 bond at the Lake County jail. Filenko said Cardona recently completed a sentence at the jail for a criminal damage to property conviction.

Filenko said investigators don't know what incident triggered Thursday's attack.
