Parker, Fowles now Olympic teammates
WASHINGTON - Veteran basketball star Lisa Leslie will have help from Los Angeles Sparks teammate Candace Parker and 6-foot-6 Chicago Sky rookie Sylvia Fowles when the U.S. women's basketball team tries to win a fourth straight Olympic gold medal.
They are among the nine players placed on the team Saturday. The announcement came before Los Angeles played Washington in a WNBA game.
Leslie has won gold medals at the last three Olympics. Also on the team are Olympic veterans Katie Smith, Tina Thompson, Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird. This will be Smith's third Olympics.
Chicago prep star Cappie Pondexter, Seimone Augustus will be making their Olympic debuts along with Parker, the former Naperville Central star, and Fowles.
Fowles played in the Good Luck Beijing Tournament for the USA Basketball Women's National Team in April. She was the leading scorer in four of the five games, and averaged a team-leading 17.6 points and 11 rebounds per game.
