Harvard home burns

Harvard firefighters spent about an hour extinguishing a three-alarm blaze at 4411 Pagles Road Sunday. A single-family, two-story wood home caught fire at about 1:30 p.m. No one was home when the fire began. A family dog escaped uninjured. Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but said the house is uninhabitable and a total loss for the owners.

Forum on library tax hike

The Huntley Area Public Library will host a forum on its proposed tax increase at 10 a.m. today at National City Bank, 13300 Route 47, Huntley. The forum is part of the library's senior coffee series. A library representative will present information on the tax request and answer any questions you have. The tax hike would raise $9.5 million in bonds to build a 33,000 square foot addition and fund a $725,000 increase in the library's annual operating budget. Call (847) 669-5386 for more information.

Dragon boat racers sought

Entries are being accepted for the dragon boat races at this year's Pride of the Fox RiverFest June 7-8 in St. Charles. Team entry fees are $425 and include paddles, life jackets, boats coaching and practice sessions. About 20 people are needed for one boating team. The deadline to enter is May 26. GED graduations

The Adult Basic Education Center at Elgin Community College, in conjunction with Elgin Area School District U-46 will hold a graduation for English as a Second Language and General Education Development programs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Visual and Performing Arts Center's Blizzard Theatre on 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. A total of 100 students, 50 each from ECC and District U-46, earned their GEDs this year.

Learn to landmark a home

The Huntley Historic Preservation Commission will host a workshop on how to make your home a historic landmark and how to join a historic district. The workshop is the second in a series of events the commission is sponsoring to mark Historic Preservation Month.
