Arrests down in Chicago
Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis says arrests have declined and he wants officers to be more aggressive. According to department statistics, arrests for crimes such as vandalism, drug abuse and weapons violations fell by about 15 percent during the first four months of 2008. Some blame part of that decrease on low morale, saying officers are performing their duties but perhaps not as aggressively as in the past. Lt. Bob Weisskopf of the Chicago Police Lieutenants Association says officers are led to believe that anything they do wrong, no matter how minor, could mean trouble for them.
