Westfield students take championship

Westfield Community School "Battle of the Books" is a game show-type contest in which District 300 middle school sixth graders compete.

The schools participating this year included Algonquin Middle School, Dundee Middle School, Hampshire Middle School, Lakewood School and Westfield Community School.

A team consisting of five members plus one substitute represented each school. Several months before the contest, each team member received a list of 50 books to read. The questions for the contest were compiled from the books on this list.

Competitions were held during the last two weeks of April to determine the top two teams.

The final meet on May 1 pit finalists Westfield Community School, Dundee Middle School and Westfield Community School.

After the teams answered a series of 120 questions, the results were in -- with Westfield Community School taking the lead by a score of 57-54.

Congratulations to everyone who participated, especially to the Westfield "Battle of the Books" team champions: Rachel Knowles, Dena Kontos, Krysta Grasso, Alyssa Lach and Urszula Kedzierski; to the Westfield team coach, Shiloh Bzdusek and to Craig Zeigler of Dundee Middle School for coordinating this event.
