Police: Man stabbed self to cover up crime

After stabbing his wife, James Polacheck stabbed himself three times in an attempt to cover up his crime, according to Arlington Heights police.

Polacheck, 51, is still in the hospital three days after the stabbing, said Cmdr. Ken Galinski of the Arlington Heights Police Department.

"He slit his throat and stabbed his stomach to the point his intestines were almost popping out," Galinski said. "The wounds were all self-inflicted."

Once Polacheck recovers and is released from the hospital, he will be charged with attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery, Galinski said.

Police interviewed Polacheck's wife, Eda Polacheck, 35, on Tuesday.

She told police that before her husband injured himself, he attacked her with a kitchen knife after a fight around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday at their condo on the 400 block of West Miner Street in Arlington Heights, Galinski said.

The couple had a verbal argument in their bedroom before James Polacheck stabbed his wife in the back -- although what exactly they were fighting about is unclear, Galinski said.

Before stabbing her, James Polacheck punched his wife in her left eye, Galinski said.

After the attack, the woman was able to escape to a neighbor's house and the neighbor called the police, Galinski said.

Police believe James Polacheck stabbed himself while the neighbor called the police.

Eda Polacheck will probably be released from the hospital today, Galinski said. Because of his injuries, James Polacheck will probably not appear in bond court any time soon, Galinski said.
