Chicago police officer arrested in Niles

The Chicago Police Department has relieved an officer of his duties after he was accused of attacking two people at a lounge in suburban Niles while off duty.

Niles police say 42-year-old Officer Gerald Callahan is charged with two counts of battery stemming from the incident early Saturday morning at The Chambers Seafood Grille and Chop House.

They say Callahan attacked the two victims for no apparent reason, fled the scene and was arrested about 40 minutes later.

A 61-year-old man from Morton Grove, suffered lacerations and bruises to his head and face. The other victim, a 50-year-old woman from Niles, suffered lacerations on her arm and lip.

A spokesman for Chicago police said the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
