Diamondback's Webb falls for first time
Desperate for a breakthrough run against Brandon Webb, Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez gave the sign for a suicide squeeze.
"I was scared when I saw it," said Luis Gonzalez, who was standing at third base.
"It's a dangerous play," said Matt Treanor, the batter.
The Marlins have been a surprise all season, and they pulled off another one Wednesday night, using the brazen bunt to help end Webb's winning streak.
Treanor squeezed home Florida's first run, and Ricky Nolasco allowed only 3 hits over 7 innings to beat Webb and the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in Miami.
"I'm not going to go 33-, 34-0 probably," said Webb (9-1). "It was going to happen sometime. Losing in this manner, to a guy who pitched a great game, is probably a good way for it to happen."
Webb was bidding to become only the third pitcher since World War I to win his first 10 starts. Instead, he left for a pinch hitter after allowing 6 hits and 3 runs in 7 innings.
"There's not going to be as much media around to be canonized -- that's probably the only good thing," Webb said. "I'm just going to have to go out in five days and try to get to 10-1."
Treanor's bunt made tied it 1-1 in the fifth inning, and Cody Ross followed with a homer. Stephen Drew hit his sixth homer for the Diamondbacks, but that's all the offense they could muster against Nolasco (3-3).
Giants 3, Rockies 2: Omar Vizquel doubled to start a game-tying rally in the ninth inning, then drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th, leading visiting San Francisco past Colorado.
Braves 11, Mets 4: Jeff Francoeur homered and drove in 4 runs to help host Atlanta win its third straight in the series. Francoeur did not play in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, ending his streak of 370 consecutive games played. It was his first game off since Oct. 1, 2005.
Phillies 12, Nationals 2: Ryan Howard homered twice, Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino also went deep and visiting Philadelphia piled up 15 hits and a season-high in runs. Jamie Moyer (4-3) took the easy victory by throwing 6 scoreless innings.
Brewers 4, Pirates 1: Ben Sheets (5-1) limited Pittsburgh to 1 run despite allowing 11 hits in his second complete game of the season, and Rickie Weeks homered and scored twice for visiting Milwaukee.

Red Sox 6, Royals 3: Bartolo Colon (2 runs, 4 strikeouts in 5 innings) made a solid return to the majors after recovering from an elbow injury, posting his first win since last June as Boston beat visiting Kansas City.
Angels 4, Blue Jays 3: Vladimir Guerrero hit 2 home runs and Jon Garland (5-3) remained unbeaten in Toronto. It was the 34th career multihomer game for Guerrero, who came in batting .260 with 4 homers, his lowest career totals after 45 games.
Garland (5-3) has lost just once in his past 7 starts.
Yankees 8, Orioles 0: Alex Rodriguez hit two balls over the fence but was credited with only 1 home run as host New York broke loose. Rodriguez homered off Garrett Olson (3-1) to start the third inning, then hit another ball over the wall in the sixth that was incorrectly called an RBI double.
Tigers 9 Mariners 4: Marcus Thames hit a grand slam to highlight host Detroit's 7-run third inning. The Tigers opened their big inning with 5 straight singles off Jarrod Washburn (2-6) before Thames drove his fifth career slam into the bullpen in left.
Athletics 9, Rays 1: Dana Eveland (4-3) pitched a 3-hitter for his first career complete game, and Jack Cust homered twice as host Oakland avoided being swept at home by Tampa Bay for the first time.
Rangers 10, Twins 1: Sidney Ponson (3-0) stayed unbeaten for visiting Texas, topping his previous team with career complete game No. 29.
One day less than a year after the Twins released the struggling right-hander with a 2-5 record and a 6.93 ERA, Ponson (3-0) allowed 1 run and 6 hits to go 9 innings for the first time since April 24, 2005, with Baltimore at Toronto.
