Prosecutors: Teen fatally stabbed cat

EDWARDSVILLE -- The mother of a Metro East teen accused of stabbing a neighbor's cat to death says her son is mentally ill.

Madison County prosecutors have charged Justin Thompson of Wood River with aggravated animal cruelty.

Police and the boy's mother, Georgette Thompson, say the 18-year-old killed the cat after coaxing it into the house with cans of tuna.

Georgette Thompson says her son told her he stabbed the cat with a knife after voices told him to do it. She says she's put her son into a group home since then, fearing he might harm her.
