Muskie program could use some help

Is the Illinois muskie program in trouble?

Maybe, maybe not. But there does seem to be a lack of adequate funding within the Department of Natural Resources to properly manage this one-time jewel of the agency.

Die-offs of young fish are becoming more common. Biologists who were dedicated to helping grow this wonderful fisheries program apparently now feel their hands are tied because of a lack of cash.

Unfortunately, fishing and hunting groups around the state and especially here in the Chicago area just don't seem to have the clout of financial resources to help the IDNR get back on its feet again.

Name-calling:ŒThe U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance has demanded the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture pay attention to it.

The USSPA wants the USDA to make a correction on its Web site stating that the Humane Society of the United States' "primary purpose is to advocate sensible public policies" and not provide direct services to shelter, rescue, or provide any direct services for animals in need.

In a special bulletin issued this week by the USSPA, the group took issue with the USDA for "calling the Society an animal-rescue group, as opposed to correctly designating it an animal-rights lobbying organization, giving undeserved credibility to that operation."

Fishing report: How's fishing? Well, cool weather and high winds have kept some anglers at home. But there were some bright spots.

Fox Chain: Decent walleye action in current areas near the north end of the Fox River round the corner from the state park. Pistakee Lake crappie and bluegill activity good here, while Petite Lake crappie action continuing to improve. Largemouth bass willing to chase wacky-style worms on Lake Marie.

Kishwaukee River: Reports tell of smallmouth bass just about ready to spawn, and a few fish have been chasing jig-spinner lures.

Forest Preserves: In Cook County, Skokie Lagoon slowed somewhat in the bass department. In Lake County, Independence Grove lake continues to offer good bass and bluegill action.
