Briefs: Union names top teachers
The Huntley Education Association, the teachers union in Huntley Unit District 158, has named its teachers of the month for June. The union started the program in May to recognize the district's best teachers. Tami Broskow, a social worker at Mackeben Elementary School, is the teacher of the month for district's Square Barn Road campus. Tammy Daleiden, an art teacher at Marlowe Middle School, is the teacher of the month at the Reed Road campus. The Harmony Road campus' teacher of the year is Cyndi Rick, an art teacher at Leggee Elementary School.
ECC duo net technical honors
Two Elgin Community College heating, ventilation and air conditioning students earned top places at the National Skills USA competition in late June. Matthew Abangan of St. Charles and Matthew Gebben of Algonquin placed fifth in the sheet metal competition, and fifteenth in the heating and air conditioning competition. The team, known as "Matt Squared" were two of the 5,000 students at the Kansas City, Mo. competition.
Violence counseling offered
The Community Crisis Center in Elgin is now providing domestic violence counseling services for northwestern Kane County. Counseling is provided by a licensed professional counselor and is available to adult and adolescent females. All of our domestic violence services are at no cost to victims. Experts say one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. Elgin police issue warning
Elgin police are reminding residents that fireworks, including sparklers are illegal in the city. They also are asking motorists to be courteous tonight for the fireworks display at the Elgin sports complex. No alcohol is allowed and the fireworks laws will be strictly enforced.
