Humor at what expense?

Patrick J. Dalton's excellent letter to Fence Post describing Bill Maher's Catholic bigotry is but one example of a growing number of contemporary comedians who seem to delight in vicious attacks on individuals and/or groups of people. All in the name of humor. Witness George Carlin, once one of the most creative and humorous co-medians. He too enjoys bashing the Catholic faith and anyone or anything else he chooses to belittle in his own angry, self righteous, vulgar way.

But Carlin and Maher are only two examples of the contemporary comedian who seem to take great delight in displaying profound profanity, meanness, and disrespect in their so-called attempts at humor. Last year, I wrote two letters to the president of CBS regarding David Letterman's show of disrespect for the Holy Father in one of his Top Ten List routines. I'd like to tell you I received a response to my letters. I did not. Neither did I hear from the FCC who received copies of my letters. They apparently could care less.

Maher and all the other so-called comedians will continue to do their thing at the expense of others as long as that kind of garbage has an audience and is tolerated by our society at large. I don't know about you, but I'm more than tired of their continuing displays of anger, cynicism, disrespect and vulgarity. This is humor? I don't think so.
