Why do we allow brush burning

I have never written to any newspaper to express my opinion before though many times I have felt the urge to do so. Today I decided the urge was strong enough to take a few minutes to share a slap me in the face irony.

Recently I received a notification that it was time to take my car in for an emissions test. Normally I leave it for my husband to do, but this time I took pause and asked myself a serious question. Why do we take our cars in for emissions test in Kane County when we allow the burning of brush, leaves and other miscellaneous yard waste?

As a health care provider and a citizen concerned about our environment, I could sermonize about the ill effects of breathing in air that is laden with pollutants, but I will leave that to Al Gore. Instead I remain befuddled and tell myself certainly we have more common sense than that…we do, right?
