Services set for St. Charles girl who died on field trip

Visitation for a St. Charles seventh-grader who collapsed on a school field trip this week and later died is scheduled for Sunday.

The service for 12-year-old Marisol Reyes is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. at Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., in St. Charles. Burial will take place at Panteon Municipal Cemetery, La Cienega Zimatlan Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Thompson Middle School student was pronounced dead about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at an Aurora hospital after collapsing during a class trip to Funway Roller Rink in Batavia, officials said. About 140 classmates were there.

The preliminary cause of death was a "noncontagious medical condition" for which Marisol was receiving treatment, according to the Kane County coroner's office. She had no medical restrictions related to school activities.

Born in Elgin, the girl is survived by parents Eugenio and Angelina and sisters Angelica and Michelle, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins, according to an obituary.

A violinist in her class orchestra and a choir member, Marisol was known for having an "extremely positive" attitude and compassionate personality, Thompson Principal Pamela Kibbons said.

Donations are being collected at the school, 705 W. Main St., to help Marisol's family offset expenses related to her untimely death.
