Teacher in pot bust will have hearing

A Waukegan High School teacher accused of smoking marijuana on the job will remain suspended with pay until a disciplinary hearing, officials said Thursday.

Deborah Logan, 46, of Evanston, smoked the pot in a teachers' restroom at the school's Upper Grade Center on Brookside Avenue, said Waukegan police Cmdr. Wayne Walles. The incident happened April 22, Walles said, but Logan didn't surrender to authorities until Monday.

An investigation showed Logan didn't smoke marijuana with any students, Walles said. Logan, who was formally charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, is free on bond.

Waukegan Unit District 60 board President June Maguire said a date for Logan's disciplinary hearing hasn't been set, but the instructor will continue to be paid.

"Yes, we were surprised," Maguire said of the teacher's arrest, "in view of the fact there is supposed to be no smoking in the building -- period."

Police said a complaint about an individual smoking weed in the bathroom was received by school security. Logan was confronted by security after she exited the restroom and marijuana was found in her purse, Walles said.
